Review of Site Cleanup, Akutan Naval Station
Akutan,
Alaska
G-Logics assisted a prominent seafood
company with the acquisition of a former naval-
station property located in the Aleutian Islands. The
site was used as a whaling station from 1912 to
1939 and as a fueling and maintenance facility for
Soviet ships operating between the United States
and Soviet ports during World War II. The site also
was used as an emergency-landing site for
seaplanes from 1942 until 1944. After the war, the
site was abandoned with large quantities of fuel left
behind.

Soil, groundwater, and sediment contamination were found at
the site beginning in 1992. The
United States Navy initiated a risk-based cleanup of the site with costs
currently approaching
$10,000,000. G-Logics assisted our client with the review of the prepared
investigation and
cleanup documents. Based on the completed reviews, we advised our client
that they should
clearly define the legal issues regarding ownership, maintenance, and financial
responsibility
for the remaining contamination and the future remediation/management of
soils,
groundwater, and off-shore sediments--particularly those disturbed by planned
site
development by our client. G-Logics also prepared official comments
regarding the property
cleanup to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and
the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers.
